Malathy Nair, PhD, President of Better Bowls Why did you locate your company in Hershey, PA?I had been working at a local food company (guess which one) when my mother suffered a major heart attack. When my mom's doctor recommended she have pudding because it is easily digestible, I went to the store and realized how high it was in sodium, which is the last thing a cardiac patient should have. I wasn't a native Pennsylvanian but in the process of building a company that could better address the needs of the health conscious while providing delicious food products, we discovered that we had everything right here in Hershey in terms of connectivity to business support services, a great network of lifesciences leadership, and a wonderful quality of life for employees (and us) as we look toward growth. What do you enjoy most about Hershey, PA?Being close to a major research center and medical institution is invaluable for allowing us to develop products that are good for people. And of course the Hershey region is known for its strength in the food industry. including streets lined with Hershey Kiss lamposts and the smell of cocoa in the air. What's not to love? What would you tell other companies considering the Hershey Center for Applied Research (HCAR)?The location is a great asset and the facilities are world-class. The quality of life in Central Pennsylvania is excellent. There is so much to do! For businesses, the access to talent in research and manufacturing is outstanding and the environment encourages innovation and entrepreneurship.
