Spring ? When New Life (Science) Abounds
Letter from the HCAR Executive Director
Exciting developments are budding this spring at the Hershey Center for Applied Research. In honor of spring, we'll start with the green news. Our building has been recognized by the Green Building Association (GBA) of Central Pennsylvania for the Sustainable Sites Award. During an awards ceremony on April 16, Buchart Horn, Inc. was recognized by the GBA for its work on HCAR for criteria using LEED credit requirements as benchmarks.

Better Bowls: The Proof is in the Pudding (and Gelatin)
HCAR has a new tenant in its Technology Suites: Better Bowls. Launched by food innovation expert Malathy Nair, PhD, Better Bowls is a company focused on introducing great-tasting food products that use natural ingredients, healthier formulations and convenient packaging to help consumers prevent or manage health issues including obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure.

The 4 F's of Biotechnology ? In Our Own Backyard
Recently a group of the region's life sciences leaders joined forces to develop a newspaper supplement defining the strengths of biotechnology as it exists in Central Pennsylvania. The supplement to the April 3 issue of the Central Pennsylvania Business Journal, available here, describes our biotechnology ecosystem in Central Pennsylvania in terms of the 4 F's, the broad categories of: Food, Fuel, Feedstock, and Pharmaceuticals.

Apeliotus Awarded $200,000 from Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Central and Northern PA
Proof that our exceptional tenant has its "eye on the ball," Apeliotus Vision Science, Inc. has secured funding for the development of its diagnostic for macular degeneration. In its final round of funding for the 2008/2009 program year, Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Central and Northern Pennsylvania and its Board of Directors approved a $200,000 investment in the HCAR-based company.
