Workshop Overview
The Hershey Center for Applied Research and the Innovation Partnership are pleased to present a workshop to assist small businesses and academic partners in submitting Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program grant proposals to the federal government.

This two-day modular training is primarily targeted to life science entrepreneurs who are committed to preparing a proposal for the December 5, 2007 NIH submission deadline, and also for those who are considering preparing a proposal to the NIH, NSF or DOD within 6 to 12 months of the training.

Attendees may participate in the full two days or just part of the training. All participants will have the opportunity to talk one-on-one with an NIH SBIR/STTR program manager on Thursday, September 6.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Life science and high technology entrepreneurs and small companies seeking funding for R&D with an interest in submitting a proposal within the next 12 months.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP LEADER
The two-day modular workshop will be led by Lisa Kurek, Managing Partner, Biotechnology Business Consultants, LLC.

Strategic Planning – Do your homework upfront!

  • Agencies that fund life science-related projects
  • SBIR/STTR program details
  • Understanding the Agencies’ systems
  • Technological innovation and commercial merit – what this really means
  • Strategies for targeting your proposal to meet Agency’s mission and requirements
  • How to do your intelligence work prior to writing the proposal

PM SESSION
Proposal Development – This is not your basic research grant!

  • The SBIR/STTR review process – learn how to write the proposal to meet the reviewers’ expectations
  • Step-by-step process on how to write each section of a SBIR/STTR proposal
  • Creating the research and development plan
  • Resources – securing the necessary resources and partners
  • Budgets – how to get the most for your project
  • Commercialization – where it fits in each phase of the program
  • Common problems and pitfalls in SBIR/STTR proposals and how to avoid them

Preparing a Commercialization Plan - Good science is necessary but not sufficient. A strong commercialization plan is a critical element in successful SBIR/STTR proposals.

  • Importance of commercialization from Phase I on
  • Step-by-step instructions for preparing a commercialization plan

Post award administration – What to do once you learn you are going to be funded (and what to do next if you learn you are not).
